The Byrne Craft Malt House specializes in locally grown and malted barley for craft brewing.

Our Story

At our core, we are passionate about supporting local communities and assisting in the production of high-quality, delicious beer. Our goal is to work hand in hand with local breweries to make the dream of a fully locally-sourced pint a reality.

The Byrne family has been farming soybeans, corn, wheat, and barley in Essex County since 1847. However, for the past 40 years, we stopped growing barley. With the recent growth of the craft beer industry, we recognized the need for locally sourced malt. That's why in 2016, we decided to plant our first crop of malting barley, and we haven't looked back since.

We take pride in the traditional method of floor malting that we use, which imparts a rich, aromatic flavor that is far more intense than what is achieved in today's industrial, time-efficient malting procedures. We believe in doing things the hard way because we know it results in better beer.

We are committed to supporting Canadian businesses, and wherever possible, we source our materials from local suppliers. This includes the construction of our malthouse, which we've carefully built using materials from Canadian businesses. We believe in supporting our community and doing our part to create a sustainable, local economy.
